The Dr. Virga Podcast

The origins of EDC (you'll never guess)

Jessie Virga Season 1 Episode 28

I’m dropping a bold theory in this episode: women invented EDC. From packed purses to park-day problem-solving, moms were doing everyday carry before it was cool.

I’m also kicking off a new EDC category in the Warfare series and sharing my current favorites—the Leatherman Arc and Knipex wrench.

I am going to make a very bold statement right now but hear me out this is my theory women started EDC done that's the theory right now most right now EDC or everyday carry is a male dominated industry and that makes sense so we're tools so are the trades that involve tools for the most part right not to knock women that are in those fields I'm in one of those fields but they're definitely male dominated no if ands or buts I don't care how you identify I don't care if you identify as a lamp shade right penises win that category and for no other reason that that's just kind of like how it progressed but I truly do believe that EDC is for women it is created by women women are still involved in the EDC community the difference is a lot of females this is again a generalized statement I don't speak for everybody but a lot of women don't really care about the latest and greatest EDC tech and I think that's kind of where it we diverge the two different paths but I'm gonna give you an example to support my bold statement hear me out you have a mom she's got two kids maybe she has a 14 year old actually that's probably too old so she has a 10 year old and an eight year old right she meets up with their Hydro Flask gang at the park right meaning the other moms maybe the husbands go along maybe not maybe they have something to do right so the moms meet up all the 10 year olds like to play soccer so they're playing soccer in the grass all the eight year olds the kids one of them brought a remote control car as they're playing with the remote control car they run up to the mom one of the say you say you're the mom right kid runs up to you and I was like mom right I don't know what happened to my remote control I don't know why your kids talks like that but he does listen to me just hear me out right and you're like I got you right your remote control car like the controller died it needs new batteries you reach the mom reaches into her Mary Poppins purse and pulls out a flashlight unscrews the back of the flashlight pops out two batteries pops them into the remote control car or tries to pop them into the remote control car remote and it's like oh I need to unscrew the little thing in the back of the remote control in order to pop the batteries out boom reach to her bag pulls out something that can be used as a screwdriver undoes the back pops in the new batteries bada Bing bada boom kid runs off thank you so much mom and they're off right you can go clanking with the with your Hydro Flask gang now that your kids are taking care of that is everyday carry the purse the 50 pound purse of a woman is everyday carry for the most part I experienced this growing up my mom was always prepared my dad was usually prepared but moms had everything that they needed a mini toolkit first aid kit everything that they needed to survive for an entire day with children was in their purse if you're telling me that doesn't sound like the foundation of EDC you're crazy now I will say one of the things one of the benefits of the everyday carry industry becoming more popular is that the tools that we use in the things that are created for EDC have become smaller and lighter and multi purpose so maybe that mom who would normally carry something that would could be used as a makeshift screwdriver and a flashlight and all these other things can now be consolidated into one tool and that's why I think it's so important for more women to get involved in EDC cause hey ladies that 50 pound purse that you give to your husband when you're walking into Victoria's Secret or wherever can now be a lot lighter right can actually contain a lot of the things that you need and that you wanna have but that doesn't take up a ton of space and that doesn't make you have to have a mini workout every single time you lift your purse another reason why women are always very strong just hear me out have you ever tried to arm wrestle with a lady who's been carrying a toddler for the last few years strong as shit okay so this is just an homage to moms I guess shout out to my mom her birthdays in a week but like women started EDC it's just a theory of mine now with that I wanted to talk about a particular piece of everyday carry now I love the everyday carry industry I don't care who dominates it as long as the innovation is there and we keep like progressing one of the things that I recently picked up was this Leatherman Arc or if you can see that but this Leatherman Arc is absolutely freaking phenomenal um yes I had it customized cause I it's what I do but as a matter of fact haha it has my it has my uh my handle on and if you could see that but um and for my listeners I'm holding up the Leatherman arc one of the things that changed the game for me is carrying a multi tool in the past I've carried little toolkits right something little um ratcheting screwdrivers and knives and all this other stuff and now I carry this and a knipex wrench like and to be honest that's all I need whereas before I had a maxpedition bag with Ed with all my EDC tools in it and it really weighed down my bag now I don't carry a purse I either have a fanny pack or a backpack or both you know I don't want either of those to weigh a ton so ladies if you are listening or anybody out there who is interested in EDC I'm gonna be reviewing some of my favorite EDC gadgets in upcoming episodes for my favorite flashlights to this Leatherman and I honestly I've been a part of the the EDC industry for a few years now this channel actually started about four years ago with a few shorts that I uploaded going through different EDC pieces of gear I'm going to be going back through those things and some of the new additions to my EDC in our warfare section so if you are interested in everyday carry if you are already a part of this EDC world and have forfeit a big chunk of your budget to getting the latest and greatest like this Leatherman Arc is not the cheapest but I have some alternatives that are a little bit more affordable then I'll be posting those in the near future this was just a little intro video to kick off what I believe is what I believe is an untouched market in the EDC world and with that I'll see you guys on the flip side
